Moving Averages Help

Moving averages are the culmination of all of the data expressed as an average defined by the number of data points (the intervals). A moving average plots itself over the other data to show a general trend of the plotted points. The more points shown, the more accurate the average.

You can display exponential moving averages, which retain more historical data and therefore show more data points over a longer period of time. They are represented by waves rather than spikes. Exponential moving averages are calculated by applying a percentage of today’s closing price to yesterday’s moving average. The longer the period of the exponential moving average, the less total weight is applied to the most recent price. The advantage to an exponential average is its ability to pick up on price changes more quickly.

DTN.IQ Chart lets you display up to three moving average intervals. For each moving average you can select the interval and color.
